Crouching in his dark corner
Eyes darting nervously about
He huddles close only to himself
Biting hard on his urge to shout
One hand on the wall,
A little afraid but very alert
He sits with tout veins
And his feet rooted in the dirt
He feels not the pain in his feet
The cramps in his knees don't matter
A cold breeze licks his back
But he shall not shiver
He makes not a single move
No sound, not even a sigh
Enemies are many and ally none
A single mistake will give him away
His legs are chained to the wall
His hands grown weak and frail
Yet, hope is stronger than a hundred men
Will and anticipation do prevail
The final night of confinement
Last few hours of agony
The last breaths in captivity
And then he shall break free
He repeatedly eyes the ground
He sleeps not even a single wink
After years of dreaming of freedom
He is now on the brink
The dawn approaches stealthily
But more noiseless is he
As his fists clench in determination
His eyes, aglow and fiery
His veins throbbing on his temples
His eyes close, shut tight
Even in the pain he realizes
For the first time in the night
Shivering and shaking, knees on ground
He gulps his pangs of unbearable pain
His body wet with perspiration
He claws the wall under the strain
Yet, the excruciating pain is sweet
For he feels only the oncoming freedom
He noiselessly screams out hard
Happiness or pain, he knows not reason
And as the first rays appear
As dawn breaks into the night
Cracks of light in the glassy darkness
As the sun comes into sight
The first noise comes to ears
From his hitherto silent cell
Of shattering of heavy chains
It is the captive's freedom bell
He screams in joy and fury
And leaps in the air
As enemies approach him to kill
But they only gape and stare
For he spreads his wings wide
And flies out of his bounds
He laughs like a mad man
Looking at his foes on ground
And he flies higher up
A graceful streak in the sky
His silhouette lit against the sun
Nothing to hinder in his flight
He gives a whoop to sound his escape
To his captors, his final goodbye.
