(K)not with Nature

This is a project we did as a group during the first month of our second semester at IDC, IIT Bombay. Prof Nanci Takeyama visited us to conduct a workshop on Cultural Identity. The idea was to understand the stories and concepts from our culture and to use them and the meaning they convey as symbols in order to communicate a message to the world today.

We created an animation video which made use of the Kolam - a rangoli made out of rice drawn prominently in Tamil Nadu, as our medium of communication. We used symbols such as a Dot that signified birth and a Snake that signified regeneration to create a message that talked about respecting our environment in order to preserve it. We drew parallel between the disappearing green cover and the disappearing importance of our own culture. This parallel served as a justification for using cultural imagery as the vehicle for this message.
